Mulford and Biddulph Play in European Spring Cup
Two Eagles represent U.S. on elite collegiate squad in Czech Republic

WASHINGTON — Two members of American University's NCAA Tournament-qualifying volleyball team, junior Courtney Mulford and sophomore Cutrina Biddulph, recently completed representing the U.S. in the European Spring Cup in Brno, Czech Republic.

The Spring Cup invites the premier European national teams including the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Turkey. The U.S. team was sponsored by Bring It USA in conjunction with USA Volleyball.

Mulford and Biddulph competed at the national trials in December in New Orleans, La. and were selected based on their performance. Other schools that were represented besides AU included Cincinnati, Notre Dame, Ohio State, New Mexico, Pittsburgh and Auburn. Coaching the team are Reed Sunahara (University of Cincinnati), Beth Launiere (University of Utah) and Darling.

Biddulph combined for eight kills against Slovenia and Denmark while Mulford added five digs and three kills in the match with Denmark. The pair also celebrated their birthdays during the trip.

Biddulph made a major splash in the Patriot League last year, earning rookie of the year honors while being named to the Northeast All-Region Honorable Mention Team. She led the league in hitting percentage while being named to the prestigious Duke All-Tournament Team.

Mulford had a promising sophomore season as she was named to the All-Patriot League Second Team while leading the league in assists and aces. She was also named to several all-tournament teams.

The American University volleyball team will again face a challenging schedule in 2003 that begins with Florida Gators Classic Aug. 29-30.
