WASHINGTON — Waiting long enough, the American volleyball team earned its first win of the 2002 season with a convincing 3-0 win over Howard University Tuesday night at Bender Arena by scores of 30-13, 30-17 and 30-11.

The Eagles finished with an attack percentage of .427 while the Bison were in the negative at -0.74. AU totaled 15 service aces and just 11 total attack errors.

Impressing for the Eagles (1-4) was freshman Cutrina Biddulph (Reseda, Calif./Granada Falls), who all but closed out the match by serving the last six points for the win in Game 3. The 6-4 middle blocker racked up game and career highs of 16 kills and five service aces.

Also playing well was sophomore Natacha Cornaz (Lausanne, Switzerland/Gymnase Auguste Piccard) with 10 kills, two digs and three blocks. Sophomore Courtney Mulford (San Diego, Calif./La Costa Canyon) was solid in the setter position with 39 assists.

American junior Natalie Hand (Keizer, Ore./McNary) had
another strong game with nine digs on the night.

On Friday the Eagles will head to the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore Tournament where they will face both Morris Brown and Coppin State on the first day.
