Capture Ramada Inn Invitational September 7, 2002 | Stats
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. Led by three all-tournament selections, the American University volleyball team (5-3) captured the first annual Ramada Inn Invitational Saturday night at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore with a 3-0 win over Texas A&M Corpus Christi (4-5) by scores of 30-15, 30-23, 30-20. Senior Judit Szekelyhidi (Ujszentivan, Hungary/Szegedian Club), junior Karla Kucerkova (Olomouc, Czech Republic/Brno) and sophomore Courtney Mulford (San Diego, Calif./La Costa Canyon) were named to the All-Tournament Team as they led the Eagles to a perfect 4-0 tourney record without losing a game. Szekelyhidi had 38 kills and 29 digs and Kucerkova closed out the weekend with 35 kills and 34 digs. Mulford was crucial with 103 assists including a game-high 38 in the final match with the Islanders, a total of 11 more than the entire Islander team combined. Against Corpus Christi, Kucerkova was impressive with 17 kills while Szekelyhidi and sophomore Daria Bobko (Moscow, Russia/Secondary Education School #786) combined for 20. As a team, the Eagles posted a .452 hitting percentage while Corpus Christi hit just .151 with 18 errors. The Eagles - winners of five straight - also sealed wins over Morris Brown, Wagner, Coppin State and the Islanders. For Kucerkova, last year's Patriot League Player of the Year and Tournament MVP, it marks the second all-tournament team she has been named this season. The All-America candidate earned the distinction at the Labor Day Classic at the University of Louisville. American University will face Duke, Wisconsin and Santa Barbara Sept. 13-14 at the Duke Classic.
