Kucerkova Named Patriot League Volleyball
Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Senior takes home honor for the third consecutive year

Karla Kucerkova has been named Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

WASHINGTON- For the third year in a row, Karla Kucerkova (Olumouc, Czech Republic/Brno) has been named the Patriot League Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the league’s sports information directors.

With a 4.00 grade point average in business administration, Kucerkova easily met the 3.2 cumulative grade point average required to be eligible for the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.

In addition to this honor, she was recently honored as the 2003 College Sports Information Directors Association’s (CoSIDA) Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive year. Kucerkova is the only Patriot League and American University athlete to have received this national honor twice.

Ending the season ranked seventh in the nation in kills per game with 5.83 per game, the outside hitter completed her eligibility with the AU career record in kills and the record for kills per game. Additionally, Kucerkova was honored as an AVCA All-America Honorable Mention in 2003 and the Patriot League Player of the Year for the third year in a row.

Kucerkova is joined on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll by eight of her teammates: Erin Allgaier (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central), Cutrina Biddulph (Reseda, Calif./Granada Falls), Daria Bobko (Moscow, Russia/S.E. School No. 783), Natacha Cornaz (Lausanne, Switzerland/Gymnase Auguste Piccard), Jennifer Cosco (Montvale, N.J./Pascack Hills), Cathy Fluegeman (Muncie, Ind./Burris Laboratory School), Elizabeth Maloney (Toronto, Ontario/Richview C.I.) and Sabrina Vasconselos (Fortalezza, Brazil/Colegio Christus).

American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, completed its second year of membership in the Patriot League. Since joining the Patriot League, the University has captured league championships in men’s cross country, women’s cross country, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball, and a regular-season title in men’s basketball.
