AU Defeats George Washington, 3-0
Kucerkova and Mulford lead the Eagles to victory

WASHINGTON - The AU Eagles defeated cross-town rivals George Washington, 3-0 in its last regular-season match before the NCAA tournament.

Senior Karla Kucerkova (Olomouc, Czech Republic/Brno) led the Eagles with 19 kills, three set assists, 6 digs and a .286 hitting percentage. Courtney Mulford also contributed to the Eagles seventh straight win with eight kills and a .727 hitting percentage.

The first game of the match was close between the two teams, with the Colonials at one point pulling ahead at by four. The Eagles were able to rally back and close the gap to win the game 30-27.

In game two, the Eagles once again battled for lead and took the game in the end, 30-23. As the final game was played, AU again took control late in the game and pulled it out 30-23.

The Eagles played a strong match of volleyball, out-hitting the Colonials .262 to .115, with 51 kills to GW’s 44. Defensively, the Eagles had 47 digs to their opponents 39 and 10 team blocks to their 6.

“This was a good win for us before the tournament,” American University Head Coach Barry Goldberg said. “We will take a break for a day or two and then come back on Sunday to see where we will go for the tournament.”

The AU Eagles will find out Sunday, Nov. 30 at 8:00 p.m. who and where they will be playing in the NCAA tournament. This will mark the Eagles fifth NCAA appearance in school history.
