WASHINGTON
- For the second year in a row, Karla
Kucerkova, (Olumouc, Czech Republic/Brno) has been named the CoSIDA
Academic All-American Volleyball Player of the Year.
Kucerkova’s academic accomplishments during her graduate studies
in Business Administration continue her history of success at American.
With a 3.98 GPA, Kucerkova continues to strive for excellence and is the
only athlete in AU history to receive this award two years in a row.
As Kucerkova looks onto post-season play in the first round of the NCAA
tournament against the University of Maryland this Friday, she leaves
behind a legacy of accomplishments at American. She is not only the first
American University athlete to be honored as All-American Player of the
Year, but also the only athlete from the area to be named to the Academic
All-American Team. For the third year in a row, Kucerkova has also been
honored as the Patriot League Player of the Year and was named to the
2003 All-Patriot League First Team for the third year.
Currently ranked sixth in the nation for kills per game with 5.78, she
has led the Patriot League in kills for the past three seasons. Kucerkova
has been breaking down American University records during her career as
well. She recently broke both the AU records for career kills and kills
per game.
Kucerkova and the rest of the Eagles will appear at the Comcast Center
this Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. as they face off against the University
of Maryland Terrapins.
American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics
program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, completed
its second year of membership in the Patriot League. Since joining the
Patriot League, the University has captured league championships in men’s
cross country, women’s cross country, women’s lacrosse, men’s
soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis
and women’s volleyball, and a regular-season title in men’s
basketball.
Chartered by an act of Congress in 1893, American University features
students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and more than 160
nations worldwide.
