The
American Volleyball Classic Overcomes Hurricane Isabel
Sept. 19, 2002 WASHINGTON — The American University women's volleyball team may have lost one day to Hurricane Isabel, but the second day will have four outstanding matches played between American, Loyola, Michigan State and the University of San Diego. San Diego was unable to come out yesterday, thereby canceling tonight's game with AU. The tournament will begin at 11 a.m. when AU and Loyola square off in the first match of the day. In the second contest, MSU and USD will begin 30 minutes after the the first match. The third match of the day will pit Loyola against San Diego at 5:30 p.m., while AU will take on Michigan State in the final event of the evening at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 each for the day or $5 each with purchase of 10 or more. The Washington D.C. Pro Women’s Volleyball Team will be playing at 3:30 p.m. between the second and third matches of the day. Numerous volleyball apparel/equipment and food vendors will be on site. American, has reached the NCAAs four of the past six years under the tutelage of 15th-year coach Barry Goldberg. AU is undefeated in two years of Patriot League play (28-0) and is led by the 2002 Verizon Academic Volleyball Player of the Year, Karla Kucerkova (Olomouc, Czech Republic/Brno). In the 2002 NCAA Tournament, the Spartans lost to eventual national champion USC in the Sweet 16, 3-1. San Diego has qualified for the NCAA Tournament six of the past seven years. Loyola finished third in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women's sports and nine for men, completed its second year of member ship in the Patriot League. Since joining the Patriot League, the University has captured league championships in men's cross country, women's cross country, women's lacrosse, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's tennis, women's tennis and women's volleyball, and a regular-season title in men's basketball. Chartered by an act of Congress in 1893, American University features students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and more than 160 nations worldwide.
