AU Defeats Lehigh For First Patriot League Win

WASHINGTON -- American University dropped the first game of the match to Lehigh (30-28), but they quickly regrouped, and won the last three games to take the match 3-1.

In the first game no team ever had a lead larger than two points. The Eagles tied things up at 28 on a kill by Cutrina Biddulph (Reseda, Calif./Granada Hills), but then the Mountain Hawks closed out the game with a kill by Jeanette Singleton. Singleton finished the first game with eight kills.

In the second game Sabrina Vasconcelos (Fortalezza, Brazil/Colegio Christus) put the Eagles up 10 (24-14) with a kill off an assist from Karla Kucerkova (Olomouc, Czech Republic/Brno). AU eventually pulled away with a 30-19 victory . Vasconcelos finished with 47 sets, four kills and four aces on the night. Kucerkova picked up 18 kills and nine digs for the evening.

In the third game both teams battled for every point. AU never trailed, but did find itself tied with the Mountain Hawks at 18 apiece. Biddulph scored three of AU's last six points with kills to help the Eagles pull out a 30-23 victory.

The fourth game was more of the same, as both teams kept close to each other. A kill by Lehigh's Morgan Volkart brought the Mountain Hawks to within one (22-21). However, Daria Bobko (Moscow, Russia/S.E. School No. 783) and Erin Allgaier (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central) combined for four points to finish the game and match. Bobko finished with four kills and two block assists while Allgaier had 11 kills and five digs.

American is now 4-8 overall and 1-0 in the Patriot League. The Eagles will continue with the Patriot League portion of their schedule Saturday, September 27, at 7:00 p.m. when they host Lafayette.
