DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The 2001 American volleyball team debuted at the Hampton Inn/Holiday Inn Wildcat Classic on Friday at Davidson College with a convincing 3-0 (30-17, 30-26, 30-28) win over Coastal Carolina. The Eagles, which boast six freshmen on their 11-member roster, recorded 54 kills to the Chanticleers' 34 for the contest.
Sophomore outside hitter Karla Kucerkova (Olomovc, Czech Republic/Brno) led the AU attack with 20 kills and two service aces while sophomore Natalie Hand (Keizer, Ore./McNary) came up big on the defensive end, registering 11 digs.
Sophomore setter Sabrina Vasconcelos (Fortalezza, Brazil/Colegio Christus) made her collegiate debut as an Eagle after a redshirt freshman season with 41 assists, two service aces and seven digs.
Jeanne Lambert led Coastal Carolina (0-1) on the attack with 11 kills and responded just as well on defense with 11 digs.
American (1-0) continues play at the two-day tournament on Saturday with a 12:30 p.m. match against hosting Davidson and a 7:00 p.m. faceoff with Miami (Fla.).
