Stats Match 1 | September 8, 2001 LAS VEGAS, NEV. -- The American volleyball team continued its recent dominance by defeating both Western Carolina and Gonzaga in the opening rounds of the UNLV Invitational this weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Eagles (5-0 overall) notched a 3-0 games record in the match versus Western Carolina on Friday afternoon. Sophomore outside hitter Karla Kucerkova (Olomovc, Czech Republic/Brno) led the team with 13 kills and also recorded 14 defensive digs. The team racked up a .248 attack percentage overall, compared to Western Carolina's .137 percent. It took the squad a little more to defeat Gonzaga the following day as the Eagles played to five games for the first time this season. Kucerkova again led the team with 19 kills, while junior Judit Szekelyhidi (Ujszentivan, Hungary/Szegedian Club) led the defense with 15 digs while also notching 14 kills for a .200 individual attack percentage. Next up in the tournament, American faces host UNLV at 7:30 p.m. Pacific time on Saturday night. They then face nationally ranked Long Beach State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Pacific time.
