Women Earn Victory Over Colgate in Patriot League Debut January 9, 2002
Kaitlin Schuyler led American with 16 points as one of four Eagles in double figures. Maria Werries netted 14 points and Chanel Spriggs added 13, while Katryn Costenbader chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds for American, which improves to 6-7 overall, 1-0 in the Patriot League.
Freshman Allison Lipinski (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Garfield Heights) and senior Sarah Parks (Wilmington, Del./Ursuline Academy) led Colgate with 17 points a piece. Lipinski, who netted four three-pointers, set a new Colgate single-season record for three-pointers with 50. American's victory
came combined with a season-record low for turnovers as the Eagles gave
up the ball only 16 times as compared to 20 by Colgate.
Trailing 39-34 at the half, Colgate took the lead 50-49 with 13:37 in the second half on two free throws by Fuller. American's Costenbader answered back with her second three-pointer of the night to regain the Eagles' lead 52-50.
American pushed the lead to as much as 11 with an 8-0 run with just over five minutes remaining in the game on four points by Spriggs and two apiece by Hollie Steinman and Werries.
The Raiders would not go away, however, as they outscored American 14-4 over the final five minutes of the half to trail 77-78 with 9.6 seconds remaining in the game. Parks scored seven of the Raiders' 14 points, connecting on her only three-point basket of the night and nailing four free throws in as many tries to push Colgate to within one. Parks ended the night with 17 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals.
The Raiders had a chance to win the game, following a turnover by Hunt with eight seconds on the clock, but Briscoe's driving lay-up rimmed in and out. Briscoe ended the night with seven points, six rebounds and five assists in a solid performance at the point.
American returns home for its home Patriot League debut this Saturday, Jan. 12 and will host Army at 3:30 p.m. As part of its Fan Appreciation Day, American is offering free admission to all faculty, staff, and students.
