American
Women Fall To Army, 78-69 January 12, 2002
Both teams fought through fouls and turnovers with Army committing 38 to Americans 29 in the contest. American (6-8, 1-1 PL) opened the game on a 7-2 run, sparked by a Kaitlin Schuyler three-pointer. Army (6-9, 1-1 PL) came right back to grab the lead at 9-7 on a three-point play by Katie Macfarlane and would go up by as many as 13 in the first half. The Eagles made a run to cut the lead to five on a pair of free throws by Jenyce Woodruff with 45 seconds to go before the break. Christine Gassman connected on one of her two free throws to give the Black Knights a 38-32 lead, and a 21-11 rebounding advantage, heading into the lockerrooms. Army pushed the lead up to 10 points, 42-32, two minutes into the second period but again the Eagles came back behind a Damarah Rhymer jumper and a layup by Chanel Spriggs to cut the lead to four (50-46) with 10:50 to play. The Eagles cut the lead to two on a jumper by Katryn Costenbader but Army answered back with a 9-0 run to quiet the home crowd and secure a lead it would hold the rest of the game. Macfarlane led all scorers with 19 points while Amy Saal and Lindsay Brent chipped in with 14 and 11, respectively, for Army. Chanel Hunt led American with 11 points and seven rebounds and Hollie Steinman netted 10 in the loss. The Eagles return to Bender Arena on Wednesday for a Patriot League matchup against Lafayette at 5:30 p.m.
