American
Earns First Patriot League Home Win vs. Lafayette January 16, 2002
Lafayette (2-13, 0-3 PL) got out to a good start, holding a six-point lead in the first three minutes thanks to layups by Colleen Fitzpatrick, Lindsay Myers and Jennifer Bayer. The Eagles (7-8, 2-1) did not grab their first lead until halfway through the first period when Chanel Spriggs connected on a layup. The lead would change hands twice more before American took control and ended the first half on an 18-6 run. Any hope the Leopards had of coming back from the 38-25 halftime deficit was dashed by a 13-2 American run to begin the second stanza, started by back-to-back field goals by Katryn Costenbader. The Eagles 92 points and 55.7 percent shooting are both season highs as the team extended its series advantage over Lafayette to 7-0. Werries finished the game one shy of her career-high with 22 points, including 3-for-5 from behind the arc. Werries also finished with a career-high eight steals, one shy of the AU single-game record. Costenbader and Chanel Hunt recorded 13 points a piece while Danielle Johnson added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Colleen Fitzpatrick led the Leopards with 13 points while Elizabeth Rojahn added 11 in the loss. Jennifer Bayer recorded a game-high nine rebounds. American remains at home to face Bucknell on Saturday at 3:15 p.m. in the nightcap of a mens and womens doubleheader.
