Women Fight Off Navy's Surge, Sink Mids 86-83 January 29, 2002
American jumped out to a 16-9 lead thanks to the hot hand of Katryn Costenbader (24 points), but Navys Courtney Davidson scored 22 of her 28 points in the first half to help the Mids to a 45-42 advantage at the break. The Eagles regrouped at halftime, starting the second half on a 21-5 run and extending their lead to 63-50 with 12:00 to play. Navy (10-10, 2-5 PL) wasnt finished, however, and chipped away at the lead until the final seconds. Maile Shimoda, who finished the game with 28 points, hit a three-pointer with six seconds left to bring the Mids within two points, 85-83. Chanel Spriggs hit one of two free throws with five seconds left to boost the lead to 86-83 and a desperation three by Davidson was short to seal the American victory. Kaitlin Schuyler, playing in just her second game after suffering a fractured hand against Army on Jan. 12, scored 19 points, including six-of-nine from downtown, and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. Schuylers six threes ties the AU single-game record. Spriggs had a record setting performance of her own, coming up with seven steals to tie Karen Jenkins single-season record of 84. Maria Werries (16) and Chanel Hunt (13) also finished in double figures for American while Bryanna Herring added 14 to Navys total. American remains home to host Colgate on Saturday in the second game of a mens and womens doubleheader at Bender Arena. Tip-off will take place 30 minutes after the conclusion of the mens game.
