American Women Fight Off Navy's Surge, Sink Mids 86-83
Schuyler tallies 19 points, seven rebounds, six assists in win

Kaitin Schuyler helped lead American to an 86-83 win over Navy on Tuesday with 19 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals.

WASHINGTON -- After a one-hour delay due to a faulty playing surface, the American University women’s basketball team used a hot-shooting performance to down Navy, 86-83, on Tuesday at Bender Arena. The Eagles (8-11, 3-4 PL) shot 56.4 percent from the floor, including 61.9 percent from three-point land, to end their three-game losing skid.

American jumped out to a 16-9 lead thanks to the hot hand of Katryn Costenbader (24 points), but Navy’s Courtney Davidson scored 22 of her 28 points in the first half to help the Mids to a 45-42 advantage at the break.

The Eagles regrouped at halftime, starting the second half on a 21-5 run and extending their lead to 63-50 with 12:00 to play. Navy (10-10, 2-5 PL) wasn’t finished, however, and chipped away at the lead until the final seconds. Maile Shimoda, who finished the game with 28 points, hit a three-pointer with six seconds left to bring the Mids within two points, 85-83. Chanel Spriggs hit one of two free throws with five seconds left to boost the lead to 86-83 and a desperation three by Davidson was short to seal the American victory.

Kaitlin Schuyler, playing in just her second game after suffering a fractured hand against Army on Jan. 12, scored 19 points, including six-of-nine from downtown, and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. Schuyler’s six threes ties the AU single-game record.

Spriggs had a record setting performance of her own, coming up with seven steals to tie Karen Jenkins’ single-season record of 84.

Maria Werries (16) and Chanel Hunt (13) also finished in double figures for American while Bryanna Herring added 14 to Navy’s total.

American remains home to host Colgate on Saturday in the second game of a men’s and women’s doubleheader at Bender Arena. Tip-off will take place 30 minutes after the conclusion of the men’s game.
