American Women Dominate in Preseason Warmup

Eagles fly by N.Y. Gazelles, 89-62

Sophomore Katryn Costenbader dominated the N.Y. Gazelles with 37 points in the exhibition matchup.

WASHINGTON -- Katryn Costenbader (Silver Spring, Md./Einstein), a sophomore transfer from St. Mary’s College, scored 37 points, including seven three-pointers, to lead American University to an 89-62 exhibition victory over the New York Gazelles.

The Eagles led by just three at halftime, but shot 58 percent in the second stanza while forcing 17 Gazelle turnovers. The Gazelles closed to within one point with the first bucket of the second half, but American went on a 26-point run, led by Costenbader’s 16 points and four three-pointers.

Sophomore point guard Kaitlin Schuyler (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) contributed 18 points, eight assists and six steals. Senior preseason All-Patriot League pick Hollie Steinman (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) dumped in eight points and grabbed 13 rebounds.

Leah Cromer led the visitors with 24 points and nine boards.

American officially opens its inaugural season in the Patriot League by hosting Marshall in the AU Tip-Off Classic on Nov. 16 at 7 p.m.
