Maria Werries led the Eagles with 13 points against Pittsburgh.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- American’s women’s basketball team dropped its first game of the season, 84-60, to the University of Pittsburgh Saturday afternoon. The Eagles dropped to 3-1 while the Panthers improved to 1-2.

Junior Maria Werries led the Eagles with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting in her hometown. Werries was also 3-of-5 from behind the three-point arc. Senior forward Hollie Steinman gathered seven rebounds, but the Eagles were outrebounded by Pittsburgh, 45-32.

The game was close through most of the first half, but Pittsburgh used five first-half steals by junior Laine Selwyn to build a 19-point lead with 1:53 to go in the first half. American closed the gap to 10 points at 61-51, but the Panthers quickly responded with a
23-9 run to end the game.

Pittsburgh did a good job on defense on junior Katryn Costenbader, holding her to just seven points on 2-of-9 shooting. This was the first game this season that Costenbader did not score at least 20 points.

American returns to action with a home game against the Iona Gaels on Monday. Tip off is at 7:00 p.m. at Bender Arena.
