American
Falls to Marist, 73-65, in Womens Basketball November 28, 2001
American led, 34-33, at halftime, and the game stood even through most of the second half. With 1:32 left in the game, American trailed the Red Foxes, 59-65, when Costenbader hit her fifth three-pointer of the night to make it a three-point game. Two fouls on the Eagles in the final minute led to four Marist points and the Foxes put the game away with a strong defensive stand in the final seconds. Other standouts for American included sophomore Chanel Spriggs (Sunderland, Md./North Oakland Catholic) and senior Hollie Steinman (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic). Spriggs totaled 14 points and two assists while also grabbing five rebounds. Steinman stood tall defensively, notching four rebounds on defense and three on offense for a total of seven. American turned the ball over 19 times compared to 17 by Marist. The Red Foxes were led by senior center Diesa Seidel, who went an impressive 12-of-14 from the floor and had 25 points and nine total rebounds. Other sharp shooters included senior forward Marie Fusci, who had 13 points and three assists while going 33% from beyond the arc, and freshman stand-out Laura Whitney, who had eight points while going a perfect two-for-two in three-point shots. American, in the midst of a three-game homestand against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) schools, returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 1, when it hosts Rider at 3:30 p.m. in Bender Arena. After a 69-57 defeat of Iona on Monday, Nov. 26, the Eagles sit at 1-1 in the homestand.
