WASHINGTON
-- The American University women’s basketball team surpassed its win total of a season ago as it rolled past Rider University, 82-68, on Saturday at Bender Arena. The Eagles (5-2) scored a season-high 82 points in regulation against the visiting Broncs (0-5) with three players scoring over 18 points in the victory.

The first half remained close with the lead changing hands three times before the Eagles took command. Tied at 21-21 with 9:46 remaining in the half, Chanel Spriggs (Sunderland, Md./North Oakland Catholic) layed in two of her 19 points, sparking a 20-2 American run that put the home team up, 41-23, at the break.

The Broncs opened the second half on an 8-2 run, sparked by one of Katie Kearon’s seven three-pointers of the game, to close the gap to 43-34. But that would be the closest the Broncs would get as the Eagles relied on sharp shooting (50.8 percent) to seal the victory.

Katryn Costenbader (Silver Spring, Md./Einstein) had another outstanding game, netting her second career double-double with 21 points, including 4-of-8 from three-point land, and 10 boards. Sophomore Kaitlin Schuyler (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) recorded 18 points, also going 4-of-8 from three-point range, along with seven assists.

Kearon finished the game with a game-high 27 points while teammates Katie Hall (10), Tanya Cross (12) and Becky Hower (10) each finished in double-digits for Rider.

American prepares for a road trip to the University of Maryland-Baltimore County on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
