BALTIMORE
--Laura Slater's 13 second half points helped Loyola erase a three-point halftime deficit as the Greyhounds got past American University, 70-60, on Saturday in the first round of the Loyola Holiday Classic at Reitz Arena.

Chanel Spriggs scored 12 of her 17 points in the first stanza and Katryn Costenbader added 11 of her game-high 21 in the first stanza to give the Eagles (5-5) a 28-25 lead heading into the break.

The hosting Greyhounds (7-3), however, were not about to give up as they shot 48.3 percent to American's 33.3 percent in the second half en route to the victory. Katie Netherton recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds and reserve guard Shontrese Smith added a team-high 17 points for Loyola.

Both teams were plagued with turnovers, each recording 24 on the afternoon, but it was the Greyhounds' ability to get to the line that sealed the win as they recorded 40 attempts to the Eagles' nine.

American will face the loser of the Georgia State-Kansas State game on Sunday at 1:00 in the consolation game of the two-day tournament.
