Women Drop Nailbiter to UMBC December 4, 2001
The non-conference meeting was close from the tip with the lead changing hands seven times and neither team taking more than a six-point lead. UMBC (2-3) got out to a quick start over the Eagles with freshman Christina Catalanotto scoring 17 of her game-high 22 points and the team shooting 42.5 percent from the floor. American (5-3) would counter back to pull within one, 39-38, at the break behind sophomore Chanel Spriggs' 13 first half points. The Eagles grabbed the early lead to start the second half off a Kaitlin Schuyler three-pointer. However, Bada came alive for UMBC, notching 14 second half points and ruining the slim Eagle lead for good with 1:37 remaining. American, which was averaging 45 percent from the floor and 43 percent from three-point range entering the game, shot just 39.6 percent on the night, including 2-of-11 from behind the arc. Senior Hollie Steinman led three Eagles in double figures with 15 points to go along with a game-high nine rebounds. Spriggs and Katryn Costenbader each netted 13 while Spriggs also grabbed six steals. The Eagles head home to prepare for an installment of its local rivalry against Georgetown on Dec. 11 at 7:00 p.m. at Bender Arena.
