Eagles
Fall to Holy Cross in Regular Season Finale February 23, 2002
Holy Cross (21-6, 12-2 PL) dominated the first stanza as three players scored six points and the team held American (12-14, 7-7 PL) to 21.2 percent shooting. Senior Danielle Johnson notched six of her season-high 11 points in the first half, but the Crusaders carried a 33-20 advantage into the lockerrooms. Holy Cross came out in a flurry after the break, shooting the lead to 18 points with 14:00 to play. The Eagles chipped the lead down to 13 with 9:00 remaining behind the athletic play of Maria Werries, but the four-time defending league champions answered back with a 6-0 run and went on to gain a 22-point margin they would hardly let loose. Werries hit a game-high 16 points while Johnson led on the boards with eight in her final game at Bender Arena. Amanda Abraham led Holy Cross with 12 points and Elisa Zawadzkas led all rebounders with 10 on the afternoon. The Eagles head into next weekends Patriot League Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will face No. 5 seed Colgate in the first round of play. The game is scheduled for Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the Showplace Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md.
