American Women’s Basketball Names Brian Johnson Assistant Coach
Former New York Liberty scout to join Eagle staff

WASHINGTON — American University has named Brian Johnson as an assistant coach with the women’s basketball program. Johnson will be involved in all aspects of the Eagles’ program, including recruiting, scouting, conditioning and player development.

“We are excited to have Brian join our staff,” Head Coach Shann Hart said. “He is a well-rounded coach who is able to teach both the guard and post positions. He will definitely help our program develop.”

Johnson, who graduated from Drexel in 1998, is originally from the D.C. metro area. Last season, he was an assistant coach for the Morgan State women’s basketball team. Johnson has also worked with the WNBA’s New York Liberty, coordinating the advance scouting and video operations for the professional club. He also spent two seasons as the assistant women’s coach at Towson University.

“D.C. is home for me,” Johnson said. “I’m very excited to come back to the area and coach at American. I am confident we can build on last season and generate success on and off the court in the coming year.”

Johnson joins a program that posted one of the best turnarounds in the nation in the 2001-02 season. The squad finished 12-15 overall and 7-7 in its first season in the Patriot League. Coach Hart has prepared a challenging schedule for next season which includes the annual AU Tip-Off Tournament and a trip to North Carolina to face the nationally ranked Tar Heels.

American University is in its inaugural year as a member of the Patriot League. The University, founded in 1893, fields a 19-sport Division I athletics program, featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men.
