Places Eight on PL Womens Basketball Academic Honor Roll June 24, 2002
WASHINGTON -- Eight student-athletes on American Universitys womens basketball team were named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll today. The athletes were among the 42 womens basketball players and the 660 total student-athletes recognized by the league. To be eligible for
the Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point
average (GPA) in the spring semester and be awarded a varsity letter in
one of the 13 league-sponsored winter and spring championship sports.
The American womens team was second in the league with eight honorees,
just behind Bucknell. Junior
Katryn Costenbader (Silver Spring, Md./Einstein) led the way for the
squad with a 3.92 GPA. Costenbader, an All-Patriot League Second-Team
selection, also was named to the Verizon Academic All-America District
Two First-Team in the fall. Joining Costenbader
on the academic honor roll is Patriot League All-Rookie Team member Chanel
Hunt (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft) who posted a 3.80 GPA in the spring.
Senior Hollie Steinman (Pittsfield,
Mass./Taconic) finished her career earning the academic honor, posting
a 3.67 GPA in her final semester.
Also earning a spot
on the Academic Honor Roll were Angel
McNatt (Adelphia, Md./High Point), Kaitlin
Schuyler (Baltimore, Md./Mercy), Chanel
Spriggs (Sunderland, Md./N. Oakland Catholic), Mariam
Veppumthara (Chevy Chase, Md./Newport School) and Maria
Werries (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic). American University,
which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10
womens sports and nine for men, recently completed its inaugural
year of membership in the Patriot League. The University had an extremely
successful year on respective fields of play, capturing league championships
in mens soccer, womens volleyball, mens tennis and womens
tennis, and regular-season titles in mens basketball and womens
lacrosse.
