American Edges Navy, 60-55
Costenbader scores 17 to lead Eagles to third consecutive win

Katryn Costenbader netted 17 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead AU over Navy, 60-55.

WASHINGTON — American University’s women’s basketball team used another second half comeback to win its third consecutive game, 60-55, over Navy. The Eagles move to 9-6 overall and 2-0 in Patriot League play. AU moves to 2-0 in conference play for the first time in school history. Katryn Costenbader led the Eagles with 17 points and six rebounds. Patriot League Player of the Week Chanel Hunt had 13 points for American.

The Midshipmen (10-5, 0-2 PL) opened an early 16-10 advantage on the Eagles. AU stormed back with an 11-0 run over a three minute stretch to claim a 21-16 lead behind five points from Costenbader and four from Kaitlin Schuyler. Navy grabbed the lead back at 22-21 and the teams battled to a 31-31 deadlock at the half.

The second half opened with neither team able to find the basket for the first 3:30. Hunt broke the drought with a lay-up followed by a Costenbader jumper. The Eagle lead grew to five on a three-pointer by Costenbader with 15:31 to play. AU could not put Navy away and the Midshipmen reclaimed the lead on a lay-up by Bryanna Herring, 46-45.

Navy was able to build a four point lead on a basket by Adrienne Roseti. AU’s Angel McNatt drained a three-pointer to bring the Eagles back within one with 5:03 remaining. American would not make a basket the rest of the contest, but held Navy scoreless over the final 2:54. The Eagles made nine free throws including five by Hunt in the final five minutes. Two Maria Werries free throws with 44 seconds to play gave AU the lead for good at 57-55 and the Eagles held on for a 60-55 win.

Navy’s Courtney Davidson led all scorers with 21 points. American shot 42.3 percent from the floor while the Midshipmen shot 36.5 percent. Navy outrebounded the Eagles, 41-30, in the game. AU forced Navy into 31 turnovers in the game.

American returns to Patriot League action Saturday at Lehigh. Tip-off is at 1 p.m.
