Hunt grabs 11 rebounds in defeat

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. — The American University women’s basketball team dropped its season opener to Marshall, 76-56, in the MU Classic. Turnovers hurt the Eagles (0-1) as AU had 26 turnovers which Marshall (1-0) used to score 27 points. Sophomore Chanel Hunt led the Eagles with 11 rebounds while also adding eight points. Senior Maria Werries led AU with nine points on the evening.

Marshall jumped out to a quick lead in the first half, holding the Eagles to only six points over the first nine minutes as the Thundering Herd built an 11 point lead. The lead stretched to 18 with just over six minutes to play in the fist half before AU began to claw back into the game. A 10-2 Eagle run keyed by four of Hunt’s eight points cut the Marshall lead to eight. AU got to within seven with under a minute to play in the first half, but the Herd entered intermission up by 10, 37-27.

Marshall extended the lead to 18 in the first five minutes of the second half. With the Herd up 54-39, the Eagles could not find the basket over the next six minutes as the deficit swelled to 29. A Werries basket coupled with two Katryn Costenbader scores on fast breaks ended the drought, but the margin of Marshall’s lead was too great to overcome.

Marshall outrebounded the Eagles, 46-37 for the game. The Thundering Herd also dominated in the paint, outscoring AU 42-24. Amy Reed led all scorers with 22 for Marshall and Cassie Hackworth added 20. Costenbader had eight points for AU.

The Eagles will play next in the consolation match of the MU Classic against Florida Atlantic tomorrow at 6 p.m.
