HUNTINGTON, W. Va. — American University’s women’s basketball used hot shooting in the second half to break open a one point game at halftime and defeat Florida Atlantic in the consolation game of the MU Classic, 92-69. Chanel Spriggs led the Eagles (1-1) with a career-high 29 points and added seven steals. Chanel Hunt and Maria Werries added 14 points each while Hunt and Jenyce Woodruff each had six rebounds. Spriggs was the lone Eagle named to the All-Tournament Team for the MU Classic.

In the first half, Florida Atlantic (0-2) went on an 11-0 run over four minutes to open a seven point lead on AU. Katryn Costenbader made a lay-up to end the drought and spark a nine-point American run. The teams battled over the final eight minutes of the first half with three lead changes occurring in this span. American took a 43-42 lead into intermission.

The Owls opened a three point lead on AU three minutes into the second half, but would not score another point for the next five minutes. A three-pointer by Werries gave the Eagles a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the game with 16 minutes remaining. American used a 22-0 run to break the game open as the Eagles built a 19-point advantage.

Florida Atlantic fought back to cut the Eagle lead to 11 with just over eight minutes to play, but could get no closer. American kept the Owls scoreless for the next 2:30 to put the game out of reach as the Eagles held a 23 point lead with under five minutes to play.

In the second half, American shot 58.8 percent to help open the substantial lead in the game. The Eagles had 19 steals in the game and outscored the Owls in the paint, 44-30. American also scored 32 points off Florida Atlantic turnovers.

Spriggs’ 29 points came on 13-of-20 shooting. 19 of her points came in the first half. Spriggs’ previous career high was 21 against Georgia State last season.

The Eagles open their home schedule on Tuesday as American hosts William & Mary at 7:00 p.m.
