San Diego State Tops Eagles, 62-45
Spriggs and Hunt lead AU with eight points each

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Turnovers and poor shooting sank the American University women's basketball team as it fell to San Diego State, 62-45. Chanel Spriggs and Maria Werries each scored eight points to lead AU while Chanel Hunt grabbed seven rebounds.

The Eagles (6-3) were hurt by another slow start in the first as the Aztecs (3-4) jumped out to a 10-2 lead five minutes into the game. Ashonda Williams scored seven of SDSU's first 10 and had 12 total points in the first half. A Mariam Veppumthara basket cut the lead to 12-7, but the Aztecs scored the next six points. AU was plagued by turnovers in the first half, committing 18 as San Diego State opened a 32-18 halftime advantage.

American came out strong to start the second half, holding SDSU scoreless for the first 6:56 of the half. During this stretch, AU scored nine points and a traditional three-point play by Joanna Barnes brought the Eagles within seven. The Aztecs responded, bringing the lead back to 11 but a jumper by Katryn Costenbader and a three-pointer by Kaitlin Schuyler cut the margin back to six.

The Eagles would get no closer the rest of the game. SDSU extended the lead back to double-digits with 8:40 to play as Ashlee Dunlap scored eight straight points.Over the final five minutes, AU was able to hold San Diego State to only one field goal, but the Aztecs made their free throws to clinch the victory.

Dunlap led all players with 17 points and 18 rebounds. AU only shot 30 percent from the floor for the game while committing 29 turnovers.

The Eagles next game will be Dec. 30 at Elon. Tip-off is at 4 p.m.
