POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Marist College ended the American University women's basketball team's three-game winning streak using a strong second half to win, 70-56. Chanel Hunt led AU with 14 points and seven rebounds as the Eagles struggled for the second straight game from the floor, shooting only 33.8 percent.

American never led by more than two points the entire game, with its only lead coming in the first half. Marist stretched the lead to five points with just under five minutes to play in the first half, but baskets by Joanna Barnes and Damarah Rhymer brought AU within one point at 22-21. However, the Eagles could get no closer, as Marist extended the lead back to five at halftime, 28-23.

The Eagles only made nine field goals in the first half and were outrebounded by the Red Foxes, 30-17. Maureen Magarity paced Marist with 17 of her game-high 23 in the opening period.

The second half did not start well for AU as Marist scored the first eight points before a three-pointer by Maria Werries ended the run. The Red Foxes continued to build their lead through the half, and were up 51-32 with 11:40 to play. The Eagles closed the gap to 13 on a three-point play by Barnes, but could not get any closer, as Marist was able to hold on to the lead for the rest of the game.

The Red Foxes were helped by 78 percent shooting from the free throw line in the second half. In addition, Marist had 14 more rebounds than AU.

Werries added nine points, all on three-pointers, as well as five rebounds. Katryn Costenbader scored eight while grabbing six rebounds. AU had 16 steals in the game, with Kaitlin Schuyler leading the way with five.

The Eagles return to Bender Arena on Wednesday as AU will host Towson at 7 p.m.
