Holds Off Lehigh, 53-47 February 15, 2003
WASHINGTON — American University women's basketball team (14-9, 7-3 PL) used strong defense to top Lehigh (11-11, 8-2 PL), 53-47. Katryn Costenbader used an impressive second half to lead the Eagles with 18 points. Joanna Barnes grabbed a career-high nine rebounds to lead AU while Chanel Hunt added nine points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals. After AU opened an early 4-2 lead, the Mountain Hawks embarked on a 7-0 run that was ended by a Chanel Spriggs layup after a steal and assist by Barnes. The Eagles climbed within one at 11-10 after a baseline jumper by Alicia Zorzetto, but Lehigh then reeled off five straight points. Zorzetto hit two foul shots to bring AU back within one with under five minutes to play in the first half. Costenbader drained back-to-back three-pointers to give AU the lead at 25-20 as part of a 10-0 Eagle run to close the half as Lehigh was scoreless for the final 7:32 of the first half. AU started the half strong with a 7-2 run to open a double-digit lead. Lehigh charged back with eight straight points capped by a three-pointer by Cat Nicholson to close to 34-32. A Kaitlin Schuyler three-point play ended the drought for AU, but Nicholson drained back-to-back threes to give Lehigh a 38-37 lead. Down the stretch, Costenbader netted 12 straight points for the Eagles as AU built a 51-44 advantage. American was able to hold on for the victory thanks to more solid defense to close the game. The Mountain Hawks only managed three points over the final 5:31 of the game. Neither team shot particluarly well with AU shooting 34.5 percent and Lehigh making only 33.3 percent of their shots. The Eagles outrebounded Lehigh, 40-32 and forced 26 turnovers. Hunt broke onto the AU all-time top-10 for steals in the season in the game. She now stands at ninth with 69 steals this year. Spriggs continues to chase her school record for steals in the season and is second all-time with 92. The Eagles begin their final road trip of the regular season on Friday at Holy Cross. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
