Earns Second-Straight Verizon Academic All-District Honors February 20, 2003
WASHINGTON — For the second consecutive year, American University junior Katryn Costenbader (Silver Spring, Md./Einstein) has been named to the Verizon Academic District II University Division Women’s Basketball First Team as announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The five first-team members are now on the ballot for the Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-America Women’s Basketball Team, which will be announced on Friday, March 7. Costenbader was one of three Patriot League student-athletes among the five on the team. Navy’s Courtney Davidson and Lehigh’s Anne Tierney joined Costenbader on the squad. Duquesne’s Beth Friday and Penn State’s Kelly Mazzante round out the team. Costenbader, Mazzante and Tierney are all repeat selections to the squad. A psychology major with a 3.83 grade-point average (GPA), Costenbader is currently second on the team, with 10.3 points per game while pulling down 5.6 rebounds per contest. She has posted three double-doubles this season and has made some clutch shots for the Eagles in Patriot League play. A solid three-point shooter, Costenbader is fifth all-time in career three-point percentage at AU. She has made 95 career three-pointers, good for third all-time. With just five more threes, Costenbader will become only the third player in AU history to make 100 three-pointers for her career. The District II University
Division consists of all NCAA Division I college and universities in Delaware,
the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West
Virginia. To be nominated for the Verizon Academic All-America program,
a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.2 cumulative GPA
and a starter or significant reserve on her team. Chartered by an Act of Congress in 1893, American University features students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and more than 160 nations worldwide.
