Knocks Off Army, 64-50 February 27, 2003
WASHINGTON — American University women's basketball team (16-10, 9-4 PL) used a 14-2 run midway through the second half to defeat Army (13-14, 5-8 PL), 64-50. Chanel Spriggs led the Eagles with 17 points and Chanel Hunt had 14 points while Kim Salem scored a career-high 10 points. Kaitlin Schuyler was the fourth Eagle in double-figures, also scoring 10 points. The Eagles jumped out to a 12-6 lead thanks to a 6-0 run keyed by a fast break layup by Schuyler and a layup by Spriggs off a great feed from Maria Werries. Two three-pointers by Mallory Fritz helped the Black Knights tie the game at 14. Four straight points by Katie Macfarlane gave Army the lead. However AU answered with an 10-0 run of their own thanks to six points by Spriggs as the Eagles claimed a 24-18 advantage. Yet another three-pointer by Fritz ended the Black Knight drought and cut the AU lead in half. The teams traded free throws and a layup by Spriggs gave AU a 29-22 halftime advantage. Macfarlane scored the first six points of the second half to cut the Eagle lead to one. A Spriggs layup ended the Eagle scoring drought two minutes into the half. Back-to-back three-pointers by Schuyler and Werries and four points by Salem were part of the decisive run that helped the Eagles open a 45-32 lead. A traditional three-point play by Amy Saal helped Army pull within 10. The Eagles stretched the lead back to 13 as Salem found Hunt on a nice cut to the basket. Fritz scored Army's first basket from the floor in over six minutes to slice the AU lead to 56-45. After Macfarlane brought Army within nine, Spriggs drained two foul shots to put the Eagles back up by 11. A layup by Hunt help AU stretch the lead to 60-47 with just over a minute to play as the Eagles held on for the win. AU outrebounded Army, 41-38 and only committed 16 turnovers compared to 22 for the Black Knights. The Eagles also shot 12-of-14 from the free-throw line and 41.0 percent from the floor. Having already clinched a winning season for the first time since the 1997-98 campaign, AU posted its ninth conference win for only the fourth time in school history. Only the 1996-97 and 1997-98 squads had more conference wins. The Eagles close the regular season on Saturday at home against Lafayette with tip-off at 3 p.m. AU will honor seniors Mariam Veppumthara and Maria Werries before the game.
