WEST POINT, N.Y. — American University's women's basketball team made a strong comeback but could not overtake Army as the Eagles were defeated, 71-56. Chanel Hunt led the way for AU (12-8, 5-2 PL) with 19 points and six steals. Maria Werries added 13 points and Joanna Barnes had 10 for the Eagles.

Werries had the hot hand for AU early, draining three three-pointers in the first half. The Eagles had seven steals in the first 10 minutes of the contest and had nine for the first half. Turnovers were a problem for both teams as AU had 13 in the first half while Army (10-11, 2-5 PL) had 14 turnovers.

In a back-and-forth first half, neither team was able to claim a lead of more than two points until Hunt had a steal and a layup to give the Eagles a 25-22 lead with 3:54 to play. Army then went on a 7-0 run to close the half capped by a jumper by Shavonne Holden, giving the Black Knights a 29-25 halftime lead.

After Army opened a 35-29 lead, the Eagles clawed back within two at 39-37 off a steal and layup by Barnes. The Black Knights stretched the lead back to nine after a three-pointer by Christine Gassman. AU made another run at Army as a jumper by Hunt cut the lead to 49-48. A Barnes layup moments later brought the Eagles even at 50.

AU could not pull ahead and a reverse layup by Amy Saal put the Black Knights up, 58-52. A Katryn Costenbader layup off a feed from Werries brought the Eagles within two, but they could get no closer as Army pulled away down the stretch to earn the win.

Army outrebounded AU, 41-25 in the game. AU did have 15 steals and force 26 turnovers, but committed 23 turnovers of its own. Army also had a huge advantage at the free-throw line, going 27-of-33 from the line compared to only seven-of-eight for the Eagles.

The Eagles return home to open the second half of the Patriot League season against Bucknell on Sat. Feb. 8. Tip-off is at 3 p.m.
