American Women’s Basketball Places Eight on Patriot League Academic Honor Roll
Werries posts 4.00 GPA in final semester

Maria Werries earned a 4.00 GPA in her final semester at AU.

WASHINGTON — The American University women’s basketball team had eight student-athletes named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll for the winter of 2003 as announced today by Patriot League Executive Director, Carolyn Schlie Femovich.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average (GPA) in the spring semester and be awarded a varsity letter in one of the six winter and nine spring League-sponsored championship sports. American tied for second in the Patriot League with eight student-athletes on the Academic Honor Roll.

Senior Maria Werries (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) was one of only two women’s basketball players in the league to post a 4.00 GPA in the spring semester. Joining Werries on the Academic Honor Roll for the second consecutive year were fellow seniors Katryn Costenbader (Silver Spring, Md./Einstein) and Mariam Veppumthara (Chevy Chase, Md./Newport School). Costenbader was named to the Verizon Academic All-District II squad and the inaugural Division I-AAA ADs Association Scholar-Athlete Team

Juniors Kaitlin Schuyler (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) and Chanel Spriggs (Sunderland, Md./Northern) both made the Academic Honor Roll for the second year as did sophomore and All-Patriot League Second Team member Chanel Hunt (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft). Freshmen Katie Walsh (Goshen, N.Y./J.S. Burke Catholic) and Alicia Zorzetto (Niagara Falls, Ontario/A.N. Myer) both made the squad in their first year.

American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, recently completed its second year of membership in the Patriot League. Since joining the Patriot League, the University has captured league championships in men’s cross country, women’s cross country, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball, and a regular-season title in men’s basketball.
