Shooting Undoes Eagles at Holy Cross, 74-56
Jan. 25, 2004 | Boxscore WORCESTER, Mass. – American University women’s basketball shot just 28 percent and allowed host Holy Cross to shoot nearly 49 percent in a 74-56 loss Sunday in the Hart Center. With the game tied at eight a piece at the 15:33 mark of the first period, a three-pointer by Holy Cross’ Maggie Fontana launched a 17-4 run that gave the hosts a 25-12 lead with 7:33 left in the stanza. Overall, Holy Cross outscored the Eagles 29-13 in the last 15 minutes of the first half, and the Crusaders held a 16-point advantage at halftime. The Crusaders built up their sizable halftime lead on the strength of 59 percent shooting in the opening period, including hitting three-of-seven three-point attempts. AU hit just nine-of-33 field goals in the first period. In the second half, Holy Cross extended its lead to as much as 24, and AU could get no closer than 15 in the latter period. The Crusaders maintained their lead down the stretch by scoring 16 of their final 20 points from the line. The two teams combined for 47 fouls, and two players for AU fouled out. Joanna Barnes (Washington, D.C./Dunbar/Fresno St.) led the Eagles with 14 points, including hitting six-of-eight from the line. Kaitlin Schuyler (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) chipped in 10 points, and Chanel Hunt (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft) added 10 boards. Freshman Brittany Kiel scored a career-high 15 points to lead all scorers. AU falls to 8-9 on the season, 3-2 in the Patriot League. The Eagles return to action on Friday, Jan. 30, beginning at 5:30 p.m., when they host the winless Leopards of Lafayette College.
