Strong Second Stanza Lifts Eagles to 72-54 Win Over Lafayette
Eagles shoot 57 percent in second half, force 30 Leopard turnovers

Senior guard Kaitlin Schuyler hit four three-pointers and finished with 16 points in a 72-54 win over Lafayette Friday.

WASHINGTON – American University women’s basketball shot 57.1 percent in the second half and pulled away late in a 72-54 victory over the Lafayette Leopards Friday in Bender Arena.

With the Eagles dominating inside the paint with 34 points to Lafayette’s 10 and AU’s aggressive defense forcing 30 turnovers for 35 points, the Eagles improved to 4-2 in the Patriot League and 9-9 overall.

The Eagles opened the game with a 17-4 run, ending at 9:35, but the Leopards responded with a nine-point streak of their own to bring the score to 17-13. With a steal and a lay-up by Kaitlin Schuyler (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) at 6:11 the Eagles were able to surge ahead. Tara Williams (Newport News, Va./Heritage) hit a three-pointer after four offensive rebounds by the Eagles to put the score to 25-18 with 3:19 left. The Eagles closed out the half leading 27-20.

The Eagles extended their lead with an 8-3 run that ended 3:30 into the second half. With a three-pointer at 11:02 by Schuyler, the Eagles continued to pull ahead, pushing the score to 48-33. The Leopards fought back and brought the game back within seven, but another three-pointer by Schuyler at 3:28 put the score at 65-44.

Schuyler led the Eagles with 16 points, shooting four-for-eight from the three-point land, while Chanel Hunt (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft) added 14 points and six boards. Williams posted a career-high eight points and three boards.

Kristen Doherty led the Leopards with 16 points, including 4-4 from the free throw line. Lafayette falls to 0-19 on the season, 0-6 in the Patriot League.
