Women's Basketball Begins Season 2-0 with 81-56 Win Over Howard
Nov. 23, 2003 | Box Score WASHINGTON - American University women’s basketball used a 20-5 run over the last seven minutes of the first half to pull away from Howard and then maintained its lead in the second stanza for an 81-56 win on Sunday afternoon at Bender Arena. With the Eagles trailing by one at the 6:56 mark of the first period, a pair of free throws by Kaitlin Schuyler (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) gave the Eagles a 23-22 lead. After a defensive stop, a layup by junior center Kim Salem (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) helped launch a run by the Eagles that put them up 43-27 entering the lockerroom. The Bison came as close as 10 points in the second stanza, at 44-34 with 15:34 remaining, but the Eagles responded with a 14-3 run to take a 21-point lead with 12 minutes left. Howard got no closer than 16 points for the remainder of the contest. Senior guard Chanel Spriggs (Sunderland, Md./Northern/St. Mary’s) led the Eagles with 21 points on seven-of-10 shooting, adding seven boards and three assists. Joanna Barnes (Washington, D.C./Dunbar/Fresno St.) chipped in 12 points, and Schuyler had a game-high six assists. Howard, which falls to 0-2 on the season, was led by Christina Aden’s 12 points. American improves its record to 2-0 on the season and returns to action Sunday, Nov. 30, when they travel to Loyola (Md.) for a 2 p.m. start.
