Rise Up in Second Stanza to Defeat Eagles, 72-53
Dec. 30, 2003 | Boxscore WASHINGTON – Despite a 9-0 run early in the first half and Chanel Hunt’s (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft) 16 points, the Eagles were unable to catch Elon Tuesday at Bender Arena, and lost, 72-53. With eight first half rebounds, including four offensive boards, Elon’s 6-5 center Courtney Nyborg helped the Phoenix a six-point lead going into the second stanza. Elon scored 11 second chance points in the first period, compared with the Eagles' two. In addition, the Phoenix took 11 free-throws in the first half compared with the Eagles two and made seven compared with the Eagles one. AU had taken a lead at 13-8 at the 13:08 mark after a nine-point run. Unfortunately, Elon responded with a 20-5 run that ended at 5:39 of the first half, with the Phoenix leading, 28-18. With 4:03 left in the first half, Elon was able to take the largest lead of the stanza at 11, but the Eagles fought back and closed the gap to five. At halftime, Kaitlin Schuyler (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) put up nine points for the Eagles, while Holly Andrews led Elon with 11. In the second half, Elon continued to extend its lead over the Eagles with a 12-4 run early in the half. AU came no closer than 13 the rest of the way. Andrews put up a game high 21 points for Elon, while Chanel Spriggs (Sunderland, Md./Northern/St. Mary's (Md.) put up seven points and 10 boards for the Eagles. In addition, Schuyler posted 13 points and two boards. The Eagles will look to start the New Year off with a win as they travel to Brown for a 4 p.m. start on Jan. 2, 2004.
