AU Women's Basketball's Second-Half Surge Leads to 72-62 Victory Over Mount St. Mary's
Five Eagles score in double figures

Senior guard Chanel Spriggs led five Eagles in double figures with a 16-point performance in a 72-62 victory over Mount St. Mary's Wednesday night.

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Five American University women’s basketball players tallied double figures Wednesday night to help the Eagles capture a 72-62 win over host Mount St. Mary’s.

The first half was a back-and-forth battle, in which neither team led by more than seven and the lead changed 11 times. Senior guard Chanel Spriggs (Sunderland, Md./Northern) hit a layup with two seconds remaining in the first half to send the Eagles to the locker room up two points, 27-25.

The Eagles then exploded in the first five minutes of the second stanza. A pair of jumpers by Kim Salem (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) helped start a 13-4 run by the Eagles, which stretched their lead to 11.

The Mountaineers scratched their way back into the game, coming within five points with 3:49 remaining. However, Kaitlin Schuyler (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) hit a layup and then stole the ball on the next possession, which led to a layup by Spriggs and helped the Eagles to regain the momentum. Mount St. Mary’s came no closer than seven the remainder of the game.

Spriggs led five Eagles in double figures with 16 points, nine boards, five assists and five steals. Schuyler chipped in 15 points and seven assists, while Salem hit six-of-10 shots and finished with 13 points. Chanel Hunt (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft) had 12 points and 10 rebounds, her first double-double of the season. Point guard Joanna Barnes (Washington, D.C./Dunbar) scored 10 points and added five assists.

The Eagles return to action on Saturday, Dec. 6, when they face the University of Arizona in the first round of the Fiesta Bowl Tournament. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. (MST).
