American
University Ties for Patriot League Lead with Eight Women's Basketball
Players on Academic Honor Roll
June 23, 2004 WASHINGTON – Eight of the 13 active players on the 2003-04 American University women’s basketball team were named to the Patriot League’s Academic Honor, tying the Eagles for the league lead, Patriot League officials announced Wednesday. Players must have earned at least a 3.2 grade point average and earned a varsity letter to be eligible for the honor. The Eagles were led by senior Kaitlin Schuyler (Baltimore, Md./Mercy), an elementary education major, who was one of three Patriot League women’s basketball players to earn a 4.0 GPA in the spring semester. Graduate students Courtney Spellacy (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds View) and Chanel Spriggs (Sunderland, Md./Northern) also were named to the honor roll. Spellacy, an International Studies major, accumulated a 3.6 GPA, while Spriggs, a Communications major, tallied a 3.9. In addition, Chanel Hunt (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft), Angel McNatt (Adelphia, Md./High Point), Damarah Rhymer (Colorado Springs, Colo./Widefield), Jenyce Woodruff (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and Alicia Zorzetto (Niagara Falls, Ontario/A.N. Myer) also were named to the PL’s Honor Roll. American’s eight honorees tied for the league lead with Bucknell and Holy Cross. The Eagles are coming off a season in which they finished 16-14 and lost in the Patriot League Championship game. AU returns three starters from that team for new head coach Melissa McFerrin. The Eagles open play on Sunday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. when they host William & Mary at Bender Arena.
