WASHINGTON, DC -- American held Monmouth to just one goal in the second half and held on for an 8-5 win over the Hawks here on a sunny Tuesday afternoon. It was the Eagles' second win in their last three outings.

Seniors Bridget McGeady and Ashley Flanigan, playing in the final home game of their careers, each scored two goals in the second half to spark American to the win. McGeady led all scorers this afternoon with three goals.

Monmouth came out quickly and tacked a goal by Heather Bryan on the board just 30 seconds into the contest. The Hawks went on to grab a 3-0 advantage on back-to-back goals by Rebekah Murphy and Jessica Salvasen.

American (6-7) finally got on the scoreboard at the 15:48 mark when Nadia Harmsen found the back of the net. A goal by Holly Deland at 6:08 helped AU cut the advantage to 3-2, but Monmouth responded with a goal by Lisa Sharrill at 3:45 to push it back to 4-2.

Late first-half goals by McGeady and Harmsen helped the Eagles knot the score at 4-4 heading into the halftime break.

The second half started very similar to the first when Salvasen opened the scoring for Monmouth just 3:13 into the period. That would be all the Hawks would get in the second though, as American's defense stiffened, allowing just eight total shots in the half.

Flanigan started the Eagle rally with a goal at 20:06, and followed with her second of the day at the 12:16 mark. McGeady put on the finishing touches, scoring the final two goals of the afternoon.

Fellow senior Vicki Miller made 13 saves for the Eagles in goal, while Monmouth's Stacy Makris made 10 stops for the Hawks.

American returns to action on Tuesday, April 24, when it travels to UMBC for a 3:30 p.m. game. The Eagles then conclude their 2001 campaign on Sunday, April 29, when they face the University of Pennsylvania at 4:00 p.m. in Philadelphia, PA.
