WASHINGTON --
American Universitys womens lacrosse program recently announced
that two student-athletes have signed a National Letter of Intent to join
its program. Moriah Linnell (Hancock, N.H./Contoocook Valley) and
Kathleen Finnegan (Annapolis, Md./St. Marys) will join the
Eagles lacrosse squad for the 2002-2003 season, as announced by
head coach Maureen Dupcak.
Linnell hails from Contoocook Valley Regional High School in New Hampshire
where she is a three-sport varsity athlete in lacrosse, soccer, and basketball.
She became the program's leading scorer in her junior year, won the MVP
in soccer in her junior year and was nominated for the Contoocook Womens
Athletic Academic Award. The state of New Hampshire selected her as its
MVP for mens and womens soccer teams and she also earned an
honorable mention in the state of New Hampshire for soccer as well as
soccer All-Scholastic honors. Lastly, in her junior year, she was a three-sport
captain in lacrosse, soccer and basketball. Linnell plays midfield and
wing for defense.
Finnegan is in her
second season as a starting goalie at St. Marys High School in Annapolis,
Md., a lacrosse powerhouse currently ranked seventh in the nation among
private high school programs. A National Honor Society member, Finnegan
also earned a Maryland Distinguished Scholar Honorable Mention award and
is a Parvis Scholar inductee. She is also active in the community and
coached the goalies on a Broadneck girls midget lacrosse team.
Coach Dupcak, entering her fifth season, is enthusiastic about the first
two signees in the Class of 2006. Im really excited about
our two signees, said Dupcak. Theyre two different players,
as one is a midfielder and the other a goalie, but they both have a lot
of personality and a good work ethic. I think they will add a lot to our
team and will each be a good fit. They work hard and play hard, which
is the way weve always done things.
The Eagle womens
lacrosse team begins its spring schedule
on Feb. 27, 2002, when they take on local foe Towson in Towson, Md. The
Eagles face their first opponent in the Patriot League on Mar. 9 when
they host Holy Cross.
American University, which is in its inaugural year as a member of the
Patriot League, officially joined the conference on July 1. The University,
founded in 1893, fields a 19-sport Division I athletics program, featuring
10 womens sports and nine for men.
