Falls to No. 18 Johns Hopkins, 12-4 March 13, 2002
BALTIMORE, Md. The American University womens lacrosse team made the short trip up to Baltimore today to face the No. 18 ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays. The Eagles fell to their nationally ranked opponent 12-4 as American dropped to 2-3 on the season (1-0 Patriot League). Johns Hopkins moves to a 2-3 record on the year. American struck first, as Courtney Bennett (McLean, Va./McLean) scored just 2:40 into the game. The Blue Jays responded as Jamie Larrimore scored one of her game-high four goals. Gina Riitano (Schenectady, N.Y./Albany Academy for Girls) scored her first goal of the season to take back the lead for American, but it was their last lead of the game. The score was tied at two 20 minutes into the game before Hopkins scored five goals in six minutes to break the game open. Holly Deland (Chevy Chase, Md./Potomac School) scored a goal with 37 seconds left in the half as she took the ball down half of the field before finding the net. In the second half, Johns Hopkins continued to attack the Eagle defense as they scored two goals in the first seven minutes. Deland scored her second goal of the game just over ten minutes into the half, but American would be held scoreless the rest of the game as the Blue Jays scored three more times to finish the game. Sophomore goalkeeper Laura Randisi (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) did extremely well against the barrage of Blue Jay shots, saving 19 in the game. Nicole McCarthy (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield) caused five turnovers and grabbed four groundballs. Americans next game is a Patriot League matchup with Bucknell Saturday in Lewisburg, PA. Goals: AU -
