March 23, 2002

Nicole McCarthy scored two goals and had four ground balls in American's Patriot League victory over Colgate.

HAMILTON, N.Y. — The American University women’s lacrosse team notched another Patriot League victory today, defeating the Colgate Raiders 9-7 in Hamilton, N.Y. Sophomore Nicole McCarthy (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield) and senior Adele Fenwick (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge) led the way for the Eagles with two goals each. American moves to 5-3 on the season and 3-0 in Patriot League play while Colgate drops to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the league.

American scored early in the game with senior Holly Deland (Chevy Chase, Md./Potomac School) scoring a goal at 28:14. The Eagles opened up a 3-0 lead behind a goal from freshman Lindsay Carmichael (Centerport, N.Y./St. Anthony’s) and McCarthy’s first score of the game. Colgate struck back with a goal by Rebecca Sandler just over ten minutes into the game.

The Eagles responded as Patriot League Rookie of the Week Gina Riitano (Schenectady, N.Y./Albany Academy for Girls) notched her ninth goal of the season. However, Colgate would not go away and they scored two unanswered goals to cut the Eagle lead to one. Sophomore Courtney Bennett (McLean, Va./McLean) scored her tenth goal of the season and Fenwick scored her first of the game to return the American lead to three goals before Raider freshman Kim Corcoran scored just before halftime to cut the lead to 6-4.

Colgate used the momentum gained from the end of the first half to score two goals early in the second half and tie the game at six. American regained the lead behind McCarthy and Fenwick’s second goals of the afternoon. Colgate cut the lead to 8-7, but a free position goal by Laura Repoli (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) sealed the game for the Eagles.

Sophomore goalkeeper and Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week Laura Randisi (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) had another solid game, stopping 10 Raider shots. In addition to her two goals, McCarthy had four ground balls and caused two turnovers. Repoli also had five ground balls.

American has a week off before travelling to Lafayette on Mar. 30 for a Patriot League showdown.
