Women's Lacrosse Overcome By Richmond
Eagles fall to former conference foe, 21-7

Adele Fenwick notched two goals against Richmond but the Spiders proved too much for AU to handle.

RICHMOND, Va.-- The University of Richmond avenged a one-goal loss to former conference foe American University with a 21-7 win over the visiting Eagles on Tuesday at President's Field. The Spiders (1-1) claimed a victory over AU (1-2) for the first time in the last three years and the first time the two schools haven't faced eachother as members of the Colonial Athletic Association.

Richmond jumped out to an early 3-0 lead 10 minutes into the contest on goals by Kristy Gallagher, Carrie Aitken and Mandy Bourquin before the Eagles could respond. Nadia Harmsen (Buzzards Bay, Mass./Bay Shore) cut the lead to 3-1 on a free position shot two minutes later but the Spiders connected three more times before the Eagles could add to their total.

American managed three more scores before the break, coming at the hands of Courtney Bennett (McLean, Va./McLean), Lindsey Carmichael (Centerport, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and Adele Fenwick (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield), but Richmond notched five more goals to go up 11-4 at the break.

The second half was more of the same with Aitken adding two more of her game-high four goals on the game while Polly Purcell and Alexis Brandolini each netted two to put the game out of reach.

Fenwick finished with a team-high two goals in the loss, the Eagles second straight defeat of the season.

American prepares for its first-ever Patriot League contest on Saturday at home versus Holy Cross.
