Overwhelms Lehigh, 15-8
Harmsen and Michael each score four times

WASHINGTON
Nadia Harmsen and Tara
Michael each scored four goals as American defeated Lehigh, 15-8,
on Senior Day at Reeves Field. The Eagles won their final Patriot League
regular season game to move to 5-1 in league play (9-5 overall). Lehigh
fell to 1-5 in league play and 4-11 on the season.
Lehigh struck first in the game as Kellan Van Hoesen scored just 2:05
into the game. The Eagles responded, and held the Mountain Hawks scoreless
the rest of the first half. Michael scored her first goal of the game
at the 5:20 mark on a free position shot. Gina
Riitano then scored an unassisted goal and Michael added her second
goal of the game to give American a two-goal advantage.
Harmsen scored two consecutive goals for American with the first coming
off of a pretty pass by Jamie Crean.
Riitano scored her second goal of the game as Lindsay
Cartin had the first of her school-record tying four assists on the
play. Crean added a goal and Harmsen scored her third of the half to give
the Eagles a 8-1 advantage heading into the break.
As was the case in the first half, Lehigh struck first as Barrie Cominsky
scored just 1:07 into the second half. Becky
Copeland answered with a goal off a feed from Cartin. Michael scored
the next two goals for the Eagles followed by Hillary
Flanagan adding a goal off a pass from Katy
Zaweski to give American an 12-3 advantage.
Lehigh then made a run as Kristin Strohm, Meredith Carso and Sarah Starsoneck
each scored to cut the Eagle lead to 12-6. Harmsen scored her fourth goal
of the game off an assist from senior Amanda
Detterline, but Lehigh responded with Strohms second goal of
the game. Rosie Sherry scored for the Mountain Hawks to trim the lead
back to six, but Zaweski and Courtney
Bennett each scored to finish the game.
Nicole McCarthy, who is second
in the nation in ground balls and third in caused turnovers, had six ground
balls and five caused turnovers on the day. Laura
Randisi saved 13 shots for the Eagles and also caused two turnovers.
Before the game, seniors Holly Deland,
Amanda Detterline and Adele
Fenwick were honored. All three played well on Senior Day as Deland
and Detterline had five ground balls each and Fenwick had three. Detterline
also had her second assist of the season.
The Eagles return to action on Wednesday at George Mason before beginning
Patriot League Tournament action on April 27 against Villanova at Lafayette.
