American Falls to George Mason in Patriot League Tune-up
Eagles Play in Patriot League Semifinal Saturday

April 24, 2002

Adele Fenwick had two goals for the Eagles against George Mason.

FAIRFAX, Va.— In their last game before the Patriot League Tournament, the American women’s lacrosse team was defeated by George Mason, 16-5. Adele Fenwick (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge) scored two goals to lead Eagles. American’s four-game winning streak is snapped as they fall to 9-6 on the season (5-1 in the Patriot League).

George Mason got on the board early as Katie Ruch scored the first of her two goals just 1:34 into the game. The Eagles knotted the game as Fenwick scored on a fast break off a feed from Amanda Detterline (Telford, Pa./Souderton).

The Patriots then exploded with six consecutive goals to open a 7-1 lead. Jill Toomey scored three of her game-high seven goals in this stretch. Lindsay Cartin (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) found Nadia Harmsen (Buzzards Bay, Mass./Tabor Academy) for American’s second goal of the game, but Jeannine Ohler scored for the Patriots to give them an 8-2 halftime advantage.

Toomey’s fourth goal of the game opened the scoring in the second half. Katy Zaweski (Huntington, N.Y./Harborfield) scored at the 12:06 mark and Fenwick scored her second goal of the game at 17:26. George Mason was simply too much for the Eagles today, scoring eight goals in both halves of the game. Holly Deland (Washington, D.C./Potomac School) closed the scoring for the game with her fourth goal of the season.

George Mason outshot American 36-16 in the game. Laura Randisi (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) was outstanding against the barrage of Patriot shots, making a 18 saves in the game. Nicole McCarthy (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield), who is first in the nation in ground balls and second in caused turnovers, posted four of each in the game. Deland also had four ground balls in the game and Denise Casey (Crofton, Md./Arundel) posted three ground balls and three caused turnovers.

American, the regular season co-champions in the Patriot League, will now participate in the Patriot League Tournament to be held this weekend at Lafayette. The Eagles will be the No. 2 seed and take on Villanova in the semifinals Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The championship game will be held Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
