American Women’s Lacrosse Earns National Recognition
McCarthy second in ground balls, third in caused turnovers

Sophomore Nicole McCarthy is second in the nation in ground balls and third in caused turnovers.

WASHINGTON — American University’s women’s lacrosse team is ranked in several categories in the latest 2002 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Statistics which include games through April 7. Sophomore Nicole McCarthy (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield) and junior Nadia Harmsen (Buzzards Bay, Mass./Tabor Academy) are both individually ranked.

McCarthy’s outstanding season has placed her near the top of the national rankings in two categories. She is currently second in the nation in ground balls with 5.00 per game. McCarthy has already set the school record with 55 ground balls this season. McCarthy is also third in the nation in caused turnovers with 3.18 per game. She has set the school record in this category as well, with 35 caused turnovers in the campaign.

Harmsen makes her first appearance in the national statistics this week in the category of ground balls. She is averaging 3.36 per game and is coming off of a week where she snagged 14 ground balls in two games.

As a team, American is nationally ranked in two categories. With McCarthy and junior Robyn Mincher (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) leading the way, the Eagles are third in the nation in caused turnovers with 15.36 caused turnovers per game. American is also ranked seventh nationally in ground balls with 30.91 per game.

American is currently 6-5 overall and in a tie for second place in the Patriot League at 3-1. The Eagles have already tied their win total from last season with at least five games remaining. American’s next game is on Wednesday against Villanova at Reeves Field. The game starts at 3:30 p.m.

American University, which is in its inaugural year as a member of the Patriot League, officially joined the conference on July 1. The University, founded in 1893, fields a 19-sport Division I athletics program, featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men.
