BALTIMORE, Md.
In their last game of the season, the American womens lacrosse
team was defeated this afternoon by No. 5 Loyola, 25-4. Four different
Eagles scored in the game as American concludes the season with a 10-8
record (5-1 in Patriot League play).
The Eagles played the Greyhounds close for the first ten minutes of the
game. Stacey Morlang scored two goals in the first three minutes to give
Loyola an early advantage. American stormed back as Nadia
Harmsen (Buzzards Bay, Mass./Tabor Academy) scored her 25th goal of
the year on a free position shot at 7:35 to cut the deficit in half. Gina
Riitano (Schenectady, N.Y./Albany Academy) cut through two defenders
to score her 21st goal of the season and knot the game at two.
After a timeout, Loyola scored seven straight goals to open a 9-2 lead.
Lynn Brandon (Exton, Pa./Henderson)
found Jamie Crean (Bay Shore,
N.Y./Bay Shore) for a goal at the 24:56 mark and Adele
Fenwick (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge), playing her last game as an
Eagle, buried a shot to cut the deficit to five at the half.
The second half was dominated by the Greyhounds as they held the Eagles
scoreless while scoring 16 goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Laura
Randisi (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) faced 51 Loyola shots in the
game and performed very well, saving 17. American was held to only 17
shots in the game.
Holly Deland (Washington, D.C./Potomac
School) played very well for the Eagles in her last game, snagging five
ground balls and two draw controls. Amanda
Detterline (Telford, Pa./Souderton) also made her final appearance
in an American uniform, grabbing three ground balls while playing every
minute of the contest.
This concludes the season for the American women. The Eagles were regular
season co-champions of the Patriot League. The 10 wins in a season sets
a new school record and American posted their first winning season since
1999. In addition, the Eagles recorded its first ever post-season victory
with a win in the Patriot League Tournament over Villanova.
