Nine American Women’s Lacrosse Players Earn Spot On PL Academic Honor Roll
Deland leads team in spring semester

Senior Holly Deland led nine Eagles on the Academic Honor Roll, posting the highest GPA on the squad.

WASHINGTON -- Nine student-athletes on American University’s women’s lacrosse team were named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll today. The athletes were among the 60 women’s lacrosse players and the 660 total student-athletes recognized by the league.

To be eligible for the Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average (GPA) in the spring semester and be awarded a varsity letter in one of the 13 league-sponsored winter and spring championship sports. The American women’s team was third in the league with nine honorees behind Bucknell.

Senior Holly Deland (Washington, D.C./Potomac School) posted the highest GPA on the squad in the spring semester at 3.88. In her final season, Deland posted six goals and added two assists.

Joining Deland on the Academic Honor Roll was junior Jamie Crean (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore), sophomores Courtney Bennett (McLean, Va./McLean), Lindsay Cartin (West Chester, Pa./Henderson), Tara Michael (Owings, Md./South River), Laura Randisi (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep), Marisa Richter (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) and Emily Sheehan (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown), and freshman Hillary Flanagan (Northport, N.Y./Bay Shore).

The women’s lacrosse squad had the most successful season in school history in 2002. The 10 wins in a season sets a new school record and American posted its first winning season since 1999. In addition, the Eagles recorded their first ever post-season victory with a win in the Patriot League Tournament over Villanova.

American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, recently completed its inaugural year of membership in the Patriot League. The University had an extremely successful year on respective fields of play, capturing league championships in men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s tennis and women’s tennis, and regular-season titles in men’s basketball and women’s lacrosse.
