Women’s Lacrosse Falls to No. 17 Old Dominion in Season Opener,

NORFOLK, Va. — After holding an early 4-2 lead, the American University women's lacrosse team was defeated by No. 17 Old Dominion, 16-11. Rebecca Copeland and Nicole McCarthy each had three goals and two assists and Nadia Harmsen added two goals for the Eagles. Copeland got AU on the board first, scoring just over six minutes into the game. After the Monarchs answered with a goal of their own, Copeland netted her second goal of the contest. Danielle Hensel scored her second goal of the game, but Harmsen and Gina Riitano scored goals to put AU up 4-2. Old Dominion came back strong, scoring five consecutive goals including three by Melody Shotwell. McCarthy netted her first goal of the game as time wound down in the first half to keep the Eagles close at 7-5 heading to intermission. The Monarchs started the second half quickly with three goals early in the half. AU struck back as Copeland netted her third goal of the game and Lindsay Cartin scored off a feed from McCarthy. Three more ODU goals put the Monarchs up 13-7. Harmsen scored off a free position shot and McCarthy scored as AU closed to 13-9, but the Eagles could get no closer as ODU stretched the lead back to 16-9. McCarthy scored her third goal of the game with seven minutes to play and Katy Zaweski found the back of the net for hir first goal of the season, but Old Dominion was to much for the Eagles and they held on for the 16-11 victory. Making her first collegiate start, Kathleen Finnegan saved 17 shots for AU. Michelle Gannon made seven saves for Old Dominon. McCarthy led the team with four ground balls. The season continues for AU on Wednesday as the Eagles travel to Towson. The game begins at 3 p.m. The home opener for AU is Mar. 8 against Colgate.
